The High Commission for Human Rights in Iraq revealed on Sunday the deaths of 16 displaced children due to a cold wave that swept Iraq recently.
A member of the Board of Commissioners , Masror Aswad told that " 16 deaths was recorded officially among children in Dohuk, Erbil and Sulaymaniyah (in Kurdistan) as well as in Baghdad."
He explained that "the unofficial numbers received by the Commission by activists or humanitarian organizations are 60 cases, but so far it has not been possible to make sure of these cases."
He pointed out that the causes of death according to medical reports are diarrhea and severe cold because of the low temperatures that led to the effect children with fever.
Aswad said that the lack of specialized health centers exacerbated the situation, pointing out that a lot of medical centers are far from the displaced people’s camps.
He added, "This has led to increased mortality."
The temperature dropped over the past two days to minus ten in several areas of Kurdistan Region. The region received nearly two million displaced Iraqis after the occupation of ISIS on their areas since last June.
